Caring for your flax weaving

Your harakeke taonga is made from specially grown, spray free organic flax.

Here are a few pointers for use/care of your woven kete/pikau/potae or other object:

  • If anything spills on it, wipe off with a damp cloth and dry immediately, sunshine is ideal.
  • When not in use, hang up empty in a warm dry space.
  • Do not wrap in plastic, but in paper or cardboard if necessary.
  • Carrying heavy weights may cause wear and tear or misshape kete and pikau.
  • If stored incorrectly mould might appear, no problem, just brush off with a brush and wipe with a water/white vinegar solution, dry immediately, place to dry in the sun.
  • Store out of direct sunlight as constant sun may fade dyed colours.

Here are a few pointers for use/care of your wahakura and safe sleeping for baby:

  • It is good to air your wahakura regularly - remove bedding and mattress, and stand in a place with good airflow.
  • If anything spills on it, wipe off with a damp cloth and dry immediately, sunshine is ideal.
  • If mould appears, brush off with a stiff brush and wipe with a water/white vinegar solution, then dry immediately, place to dry in the sun.
  • Mattress should be firm and thin. It should fit your wahakura snuggly and have no gaps around the edges that baby could slip down and become stuck.
  • Do not add more padding, or any other accessories including toys.
  • When not in use, store empty in a warm dry space.
  • Do not wrap in plastic, but in paper or cardboard if necessary.
  • Wahakura should be used for babies sleeping only and not for carrying.
